It has been such a great year, photography-wise and life-wise. Personally, I feel like I've had some active progression when it comes to shooting and post-processing. It's been great getting to know (and eventually meet) some of the amazing people here on Flickr. And as far as my home life, well..... most of you know the main part of that story. ;)

Love In The Limelight... And Redlight... And Bluelight...

Disney's Human Element - Love In The Limelight

More than any other time of the year, Christmas brings with it a spirit that can't be beat. It's full of the spirit of love... the spirit of giving... the spirit of cherishing all that is dear to you. And what better place than Disney to celebrate this spirit explosion. [No pun intended; as a major cheerleading competition is also held at this park every year] ;)

Disney's Human Element - "Oh Santa!"

Mariah Carey - "Oh Santa!" ..... Disney Christmas Parade Taping

Since 1983, early December has brought the filming of the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. Shot in Walt Disney World, as well as Disneyland; this event showcases some of the top musical acts around today. Seen on ABC, viewers have been treated to performances by Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, The Jonas Brothers, Diana Krall, Stevie Wonder, and Menudo (just trying to show a little diversity there); as well as countless other musicians.

And as a bonus treat for attendees like myself; you get to stand around for hours listening to the same beautiful Christmas song over and over.... all while trying to not get crushed by the Jonas lovin' teens. ;)

Disney's Human Element - Taking A Ride On The Roy O.

"I just want it to look like nothing else in the world. And it should be surrounded by a train."
- Walt Disney

Taking a ride on the Walt Disney Railroad is one of the most peaceful experiences at the park. And not only is it a mode of transportation to give from one area to another; but you'll also get the chance to see views of the Magic Kingdom that would otherwise be totally hidden.

The Fear Factor

Disney's Human Element - The Fear Factor

'The unknown' can be a great nemesis when it comes to you trying to conquer your fears. Many people have been fearful of the Tower of Terror just by its name alone. And any descriptions of the ride, or actually seeing it in person, don't help to calm someone's apprehension. From the moment you set foot on this haunted property, you are already enveloped in the experience. Nothing you encounter upon your journey will help to ease this fear..... not the outside 'gardens'.... not the hotel personnel..... not the 'glorious' lobby..... not the teenage girls screaming for no reason.... and definitely not the pre-show. If you're fearful going in, you'll be fearful until the end.

Traditions, no matter how big or how small, can be hard to maintain. As generations go by, individuals' circumstances will change; and it can sometimes be difficult to celebrate the ways of the past. But it's a special experience when an old tradition for someone else can become a new tradition for you. At Epcot's World Showcase, guests have an opportunity to witness pieces of heritage from all over the world. From the kumi-daiko in Japan, to Oktoberfest in Germany, to the celebrated street performers of Italy; this display of cultural customs can spark a newfound love for the old ways.

Bringing In The 4th

Disney's Human Element - Bringing In The 4th

Every year at the Magic Kingdom, Disney puts on a SPECTACULAR fireworks display; with 360 degrees of pure goodiness!!!!!! And if you don't want to brave the crowds on the 4th, you can even check out the same show on the 3rd (as I did here). ;)

As this was my first visit to the Magic Kingdom for this event, I'll admit that I was being a little pouty as we were moving further and further from the castle as the fireworks were about to begin. As you can see, we didn't end up in the greatest of spots, but the show took an amazing turn; and fireworks were going off all around us. So we were still able to really enjoy this magnificent display.

Animation drawings were once hand-inked or photocopied onto clear pieces of celluloid - or cels - and then hand-painted. Today, using computer technology, character and effects drawings are inked and painted digitially. As much emphasis as Disney places on giving its guests a great experience, they also never take shortcuts when it comes to guests' safety.

Everywhere you go on Disney property, the wardrobe/'costumes' of its Cast Members varies; depending on the theme. One thing that is completely traditional, is the dress of its lifeguards. Desperate Times.... Desperate Measures

Disney's Human Element - Desperate Times... Desperate Measures (by Scott Smith (SRisonS))

... A little more stretch, and she could've gotten the whole wall in there. Oh well, maybe next time. ;)

We've all been in this scenario; we want a picture of us "being there", but no one's around to take the pic. I know it doesn't seem right for me to say that... seeing as how I'm taking a picture of her taking her own picture; but I'm really not that mean (there were quite a few people near her, and I even started to walk over before she eventually moved). Although most of these shots don't turn out the best (is that an iPhone??? Maybe she has a specially designed UUUUWA on there), but when they're well executed, the perspective can add a beautiful element to the shot.

But when you're at Disney, and you feel like you have to rely on taking your own picture... just ask somebody!!!! Most people are very willing to help. And if you see someone trying to take these self-portraits, don't stop and take a picture of them struggling. Stop whatever you're doing, and help them out. ;)

One of special aspects about being a part of the Disney community, is the happiness people express for others' accomplishments. Whether it's booking a trip, buying a "new toy", getting married.... just WHATEVER; someone always seems to be there to at least express a simple 'Congrats'.

Most recently, a book entitled The Unofficial Guide: The Color Companion to Walt Disney World was released; and I'm proud to say that a few of my Flickr contacts have been spotlighted in the book. And now their work is out there for the world to see. It's definitely a travel guide; but their amazing Disney pictures help guide guests all over "The World".

We're All PhotoPass Photographers

When visiting Disney, one of the small rewarding experiences you can have is to take family pictures for people. I'm sure some people feel like they might be inconveniencing other guests, but most people will gladly help out. We've all been in a situation where we want the entire group in a shot, but someone always gets left out. Or we have desperate situations where we'll just sit our camera on a wall, set the timer, and hope for the best (God forbid the wind is strong, and it knocks your camera on the ground.... UGH!!!).

I was recently at Epcot, and saw a family resting the camera on the wall and setting the timer. I was the only other person even near them, so I couldn't NOT help out. And to make it even better, they were just completely grateful!!!

Kayla, Earning Her Ears / Pin Trading

Disney's Human Elements - Kayla, Earning Her Ears / Pin Trading (by Scott Smith (SRisonS))

I cheated on this one.

When I first set out to do this “Disney’s Human Element” project, getting a shot of Pin Trading was one of the musts. I also wanted every single shot to be totally candid (we’ll see what happens with the Streetmosphere performers though).

For starters, this wasn’t the composition I was going for. I saw the perfect opportunity when a woman approached this Cast Member to try to do a pin trade. When I tried to move into position, my sleeve got caught up on a hanger. After finally raising the camera, the pin trade was already under execution; and the woman’s hand was too much a part of the shot. I was pretty disappointed, because I really like the colors of the CM’s uniform; and her co-worker was standing next to her, giving even more color to the shot. So I stood around the area, like a creepy weirdo, to see if anyone else would walk up. After spending 2 or 3 minutes looking at kiddie toys (WAAAAAYY too long if you really have no interest in buying them), I finally decided to just ask her to do a pin trading pose. If it wasn’t for her complete enthusiasm, and definite willingness to help me get a good shot; I probably wouldn’t have used this. But because of her graciousness, I couldn’t NOT use this shot. Then again, I was quite please how this turned out. The nice smile really helped this out too. :)

For the frequent visitor, this is definitely a part of the Disney lifestyle. And everyone has their own idea on what makes a great nap location. But with all of the hustle and bustle going on, you take ‘em where you can get ‘em.

You can use a wall, or a bench. Or visit rides and attractions, such as; the Haunted Mansion, the Hall of Presidents (or any of the indoor shows), Spaceship Earth (I’m partial to this one, myself), and the back of Town Square Exposition Hall (I think this would be the ultimate nap location, due to the fact there’s no time limit). Reaching Out

Disney's Human Element - Reaching Out (by Scott Smith (SRisonS))

In being a part of the Disney community, you realize the part that Disney can play in people's lives. And when interacting with others, you feel the comfort and welcoming that you won't get anywhere else.

Every once in a while, you'll see someone asking for a Disney related favor. The skeptical part of you makes you hesitate to get involved; but the "Disney" part of you takes over, and you gladly see what you can do. Last year, a chance encounter allowed me to reach out to a grieving mother..... the skeptical part never kicked it.

In April of 2009, Jennifer Dooley lost her son Michael. It would have been his 10th birthday that July; and a June trip to Star Wars Weekends was in order. Unfortunately, he was unable to make that trip. Fortunately for Jenn, a great friend of hers was eagerly waiting to help. Her friend made a post on the Star Wars message boards; asking for some assistance in a very special endeavor. The night before Star Wars Weekends began; I was visiting these boards one last time, to make sure no unexpected events were occurring. That’s when I came upon the posting. I immediately started to think how I could help…. and contribute to the Michael’s Name Project. So I made the sign that’s pictured, and had a few of the Star Wars Characters (the Disney ones) sign it. I e-mailed the pictures to Jenn’s friend, who then mailed them to Jenn herself. I thought I’d just get a nice simple e-mail saying thanks. But I received an e-mail from Jenn, and another from a relative of hers, expressing their deepest heartfelt gratitude. All in all, it was a true pleasure being able to bring any amount of happiness to this family. I am so glad I decided to reach out.

May the Disney Force Be With Us All.

Bon Appetit!!!

Disney's Human Element - Bon Appetit!!!

I'll let Anthony Bourdain take the reins for this one.... (visualize soft French music)

*********************************************************************
Why the French don't suck!

Sure, the French are renowned for their culinary technique and invention. But even more crucial, more precious, is the sensual point of view behind it. That drives not only their cuisine, but their entire existence. It may just save the world.

The most important thing to do the instant you arrive is Paris, is stop. Find someplace inviting, and slip comfortably into the Parisian pace of life.

... This gets right to the kernel of what distinguishes the French. What are the French famous for? Perfume that smells good. Sense of smell. Food that tastes good. Sense of taste. Art, architecture. Visual sense. Ok, there's really no explanation for their crap pop music. But, you know, 3 out of 4 is not bad. These are all matters of the senses. It's their attitude towards pleasure, and sensuality. And food, in general, being the best example.

... Eating is, and should be, a joyous occasion. As should the use of all your senses. So America, perhaps you should try it. Maybe duck out of the office when the boss isn't looking. Or call in sick for that boring meeting. Pull up a chair in a local joint. Grab a tasty beverage, and eat a ham sandwich. REALLY eat a ham sandwich. You just may find you not only love the French again; but you may also love life.... and ultimately... the world.

- No Reservations - Season 1, Episode 1 ..... Netflix ROCKS btw. ;)

This kid and his brother were just great!!! It was nice to see them having such a great time. You could tell, for them, that this truly was the 'Happiest Place On Earth'.

Inspirational Shots

It' amazing to see other people's perspective on things you see all the time. Although these shots are completely unique, because of the people in them; they are still very much "everyday Disney". Here are just a few Disney pics that have provided inspiration.

The Chosen Few

Disney's Human Element - The Chosen Few (by Scott Smith (SRisonS))

Although there are many rides and attractions at Disney, it seems that a lot of guests include these street performance/participation scenes into their itinerary. Besides this Pirates of the Caribbean theme, the Jedi Training Academy has become quite the hit. I kinda wish they'd do one for adults. It'd be pretty cool to get in a lightsaber fight with Darth Maul.

The Best Seat In The House

Sometimes, this can be a nuisance to people in the immediate vicinity. But to the child, it is literally the Best Seat In The House. It's like you're the only one in the theater of a thousand people.

Disney Is Not Just Mickey Mouse and Fairy Tales

There is a lot that makes Disney what it is. But to me, Disney's Human Element is what makes it's "world" unique. I'm gonna do my best to showcase the real people of Disney; i.e..... regular Cast Members, guests, and street performers. But NO pictures of Disney characters (this will be mainly a photo blog, btw); only with the exception of them not being the main focus.

I hope you enjoy!!!!! ;)
